What does a typical class involve? What is a typical format of a class?

A typical session would involve:

  • Full body warm up including mobility and activation drills
  • Basic Kihon technique drills
  • Basic Kumite technique drills
  • Kata learning, practice and Bunkai (application) 
  • Full body warm down and stretching
  • Meditation

Will Karate help me to defend myself in real-life situations?

Yes – one can develop confidence and empowerment to deflect any dangerous situations.

What will I need for my free trial classes?

Comfortable loose clothing, indoor shoes, water.

What age do you accept children into your school?

We accept children from age 5

Am I too old to start a martial art?


Do I need to be fit before I start martial arts?

Nope, generally people join to improve their fitness. We have people from all levels of fitness. 

Are your classes safe?

Our training follows up to date principles and practices to ensure that they are as safe as they can be. We have very few injuries but we are trained sports first-aiders, as you would expect.

What are the benefits from taking martial arts classes?

Increase confidence, improve focus or develop discipline. A good martial arts method will enable a child to develop all of these, with the added benefit of improving their fitness, strength and social skills.

Are there other beginners in the classes?

Yes, we have beginners starting our classes all of the time. We do split our classes by ability – Beginners, intermediate, advanced.

Are there fees associated with gradings?

Yes these dependant on Grading level.

Do you train with weapons or grappling?

As you progress onto Black belt, there is an element of knife defences as part of our syllabus.

Do you do sparring in your school?

Yes, we practice with protective gear, and our sparring is controlled contact and used for scoring points.

Will I have to enter competitions?

Only if you choose to, we support all our karateka with their preferences.

What style of Karate do you practice?

We practice Shotokan Karate.
